Three of Cups – A Music and Tarot Discussion

One of the best ways to learn something is through making a personal connection to it. Being that Tarot speaks to so many facets of life, lyrics lend themselves well to the cards. Music has power and we make connections to it on a regular basis. In a way, it’s magic because it can transport us back to moment frozen in time as the music and lyrics pluck memories from our minds.

Three of Cups is all about the good times! Whether it’s going out with your crew, attending celebrations, or chilling with your homies by the campfire. Making wonderful memories is the aim of the game when this card shows up. Alway welcome in reading, this card indicates that fun is to be had!

All Summer Long – Kid Rock

Damn, I just love this song! Times like the ones Kid sings about are so far gone. But, hanging out with your friends, doing stupid crap and making amazing memories is where it’s at. The lyrics alone embody the sentiment of the Three of Cups, however, that Sweet Home Alabama riff lifts everyone up! Spending time on the beach and waiting for nightfall so they could party and rock n roll, man! Sounds like a Three of Cups party to me!

What song represnts this card for you? I’d love to give it a listen!

6 of Swords – A Music & Tarot Discussion

Sometimes learning to read Tarot is a real struggle! I mean learning 22 major arcana card and 56 minor arcana cards can be daunting! Seriously, learning medical terminology was less work. Generally we learn things better when we can see or make connections. I have had a Tarot deck for 20 years now, and still struggle with some of the cards. As I have collected more decks, I’ve also found that the meanings can be expressed and interpreted in a multitude of ways. So begins my journey.

Music has been a major player in my life. Songs trigger emotions, transport us back to moments in time, and are basically the soundtrack to life! Why not connect each tarot card to a song? A few months ago I began doing just that. These posts have been evolving over time  I hope you will decide to join in on the conversation!

Just a special note: When writing these I consult a number of decks. Some are traditional Rider Waite system and some are not. My first Tarot, Legend The Arthurian Tarot, has Wands-Air and Swords-Fire. Honestly, this has always made more sense to me than the much more common associations of Wands-Fire and Swords-Air. So occasionally these other traits have influenced my choice.

6 of Swords

6 of Swords most commonly represents making a change or embarking on an adventure that clearly has obstacles and challenges. Often it literally means travelling, especially by water. However it can also refer to spiritual travels as well as our final journey.

  • Movement
  • Journey by Water
  • Anticipation
  • Breaking Free of a Rut
  • Easing Restrictions
  • Destination Unknown
  • Hope
  • Travel
  • Hope
  • Steady Progress
  • Improvement
  • Heading for Trouble
  • Wasted Efforts
  • Change in Plans

Come Sail Away – Styx

6 of Swords felt like a fairly easy one to choose this time! As soon as I thought about travel by sea the song just started playing in my head! I especially knew I was on the right track when I noted that the book, Gateway to the Divine Tarot, refers to the River Styx in its description of this card! So the obvious part of why I chose this song is travelling by water and sailing away are a good match up. In addition to this, there is also the lyrics. Essentially they are seeking new adventures. The song notes that there have been good times and bad times. The singer wants to be free. Angels are also mentioned in the song which ties in nicely with journeying to the Otherworlds.

I’m sailing away, set an open course for the virgin sea
Cause I’ve got to be free, free to face the life that’s ahead of me
On board, I’m the captain, so climb aboard
We’ll search for tomorrow on every shore
And I’ll try, oh Lord, I’ll try to carry on

Finding the Conflict – NaNoWriMo & Tarot

Finding the conflict in the story. Today Tea for Tarot is challenging us to uproot the conflict in Austin’s story. What tensions are in store for her? To follow along: Day 7

Why does Austin even care?
Ace of Swords
Because hunting targets has become a bit of an obsession for her. It challenges her mind, allows her to think creatively, and allows her to express her authority. Might even let her express her darkness a bit.

What obstacles will Austin encounter?
8 of Swords
Austin will feel as though she is caught in a spider’s web. Interference, boundaries, and difficulties will have her feeling stuck.

What tools will Austin find to overcome these obstacles?
King of Swords
Austin will set goals and do her research. She might even take a page from Darius’ book and acquire some pertinent information to trade.

What will happen to raise the stakes?
10 of Swords
Everything goes sideways.

What is the urgency driving her?
6 of Cups
She’s haunted by her past mistakes and has realized she’s been getting defective information.

What uncertainty is there about the situation?
2 of Swords
Will Austin be able to remain impartial? Will things balance themselves out?

Where will your hero find a safe haven?
6 of Swords
She will find safe haven on a ship. She might even find a love interest to distract her.

What will threaten that sanctuary?
Page of Wands
Impulsiveness and a need to win will threaten Austin’s sanctuary.

What inner turmoil is Austin experiencing?
8 of Coins
She is well trained but is being overly cautious. She wants more responsibility but is afraid to take it.

Looks like our Austin has a lot to deal with!

Bullet Journal Grimoire

Intrigued by how a book is constructed, I decided to give it a try. I fully believe that building, constructing, or creating something yourself gives it more “power” and allows a deeper “connection.”  So I searched YouTube for how-to videos and found some great ones by Sea Lemon.

I followed her videos through the process of folding and organizing the pages into signatures and then marking them for the hole punching that I would be sewing through.

Pages Organized Into Signatures and Marked for Punching

Then I had to learn how to do a Kettle Stitch to sew the pages into a block.

Signatures Sewn Into a Block

My husband and I built a book press in order press the glued block into a text block. When we first attempted Sea Lemon’s design, the book did not press flat. The edge of the book acted like a fulcrum and caused the board to tip off the pages and actually started to split. Enter the “Let’s make shit work” guy (aka my hubby) who decided we needed to add some sheet metal to it to give it some support. It worked pretty good!

While the glue dried on that, I had to decide what I wanted my cover to look like. I chose some fairly simple images that represented some of my spirit guides and compiled them into an image I thought would look pleasing.

Then came the difficult part: transferring the design to the green garment leather I picked up at the local fabric store. I used a bone folder to press through the paper to the surface and then traced over it lightly with a pen. I am sure there are easier methods but I’m too impatient to wait to acquire things and so I made it work.

Over the next few days, I spent my evenings embroidering the green leather until my design was finished.

Embroidery is Partially Completed on the Cover Leather

Next came putting the book together. I had to layout the book boards (I used packaging cardboard) over the leather and glue them in place, trim away the excess leather on snip the corners, attach the text block to the cover and glue it all together.

Preparing the Book Cover for Attachment

Once it was put together the book had to sit in the book press for a while again but it came out looking awesome!

Completed Hand-bound Bullet Journal Grimoire

Now what to do with this book?

I had been discussing Journals, Books of Shadow (BoS), and Grimoires in a spiritual group that I am part of.  I wanted something that would allow me to keep track of all my interests: Physical Activity Plans, Oracles, Life Cycles, and Spirituality. Elements of journalling, and keeping a BoS or Grimoire, really appeal to me. Since I am still discovering my Spiritual Path, I am still figuring out what feels right. I don’t see my self writing spells so a Book of Shadows or Grimoire solely didn’t seem right.

I do want to write thoughts about oracle, tarot, and rune meanings.  Record spreads that I design. Track the Solstices and the Equinoxes. Follow the Moon Phases. Plan my trail running program. You get the point.

Obviously I needed a flexible system. Enter the Bullet Journal. I stumbled on an article about keeping a bullet journal and I was so interested! This seemed easy to do and some of the pages I saw were pretty amazing!

So I created some pages of my own that I think are pretty great!

I am really happy with how my Bullet Journal Grimoire is turning out and I hope to fill it up with all the things I love!

Have you bound a book or created your own version of a Bullet Journal, Book oF Shadows or Grimoire? I’d love to hear about it!
