Chapters – NaNoWriMo Tarot

Chapters are like mini stories within the story and Tea is for Tarot invites us to draw 10 cards for 10 chapters. As indicated in her post, we are supposed to write approximately 1600 words a day during NaNoWriMo. (Side note: I haven’t started yet! Unfortunately, I am still finishing up all these lovely spreads because I was travelling!). Follow along here: Day 10

The Chapters

We have the option to reorganize the 10 cards what drew into a more cohesive story, but I haven’t done so as I really haven’t had the chance to explore them just yet. Subsequently, the picture represents how I drew them. To start with, I think they look OK on first glance, but let’s explore shall we?

Chapter One
The Fool

Above all, this is the perfect  card for the beginning! Why not start with the first card in the Tarot’s Major Arcana? In the beginning our heroine, Austin, is hopeful and open. She’s looking toward a bright future unaware of what is in store for her. We’ll get to know who Austin is and what her life is like before the drama ensues.

Chapter Two
The Magician

Austin’s repertoire of skills represent the Magician’s energy. However, cunning and subterfuge, the reverse aspects of this card, are dangerous energies to play with.  Moving players about on the grand chess table is appealing for her, but something has to go wrong. I think, at the core of it, a dark choice Austin makes will contribute to the disaster. Over confidence? Weakness of will?

Chapter Three
Knight of Swords

Austin’s ideals are challenged and her analytical skills are put to the test. The villain makes his appearance and leaves Austin totally shaken.

Chapter Four
2 of Cups

Considering this is a mercenary suspense/mystery novel, love is sure in the air! This chapter introduces Austin to her love interest. Pretty straight forward as far as the chapters go.

Chapter Five
Page of Wands

Some of the conflict comes into play here when Austin makes snap decisions. As noted in Finding The Conflict , impulsiveness and the need to win are going to threaten Austins’s sanctuary.

Chapter Six
The Devil

Uh-oh! Will Austin give in to her desires? Will she go to the dark side? In this chapter Austin will wrestle with what her true wants are and what she needs to do to achieve them. Does Darius make her an offer that has her second guessing herself?

Chapter Seven
The Hanging Man

Respite is what Austin is seeking in this chapter. Taking a step back and finding a sanctuary to lick her wounds and reorient herself to where she needs to go.

Chapter Eight
Queen of Cups

Finally accepting her feelings for what they are, Austin connects to her intuition and gives trusting herself a chance. In this chapter, she also reveals how much she really cares for the people in her life.

Chapter Nine
Ace of Coins

Austin sees an opportunity and begins putting her plans into place. These plans will have a favorable outcome but are intense. However, this is only the start.

Chapter Ten
Three of Wands

Well now. We have arrived at the card for the love interest. Will this be the start of something wonderful? Or will something happen to him that Austin needs to act on in a future book? Can’t wait to find out!

Build Your World – NaNoWriMo Tarot

Build Your World is the spread for this day. Tea is for Tarot created a 5 card spread to flesh out the world Austin is a part of. Darn it! I didn’t notice that day that she had a bonus card in there! I took the photos every day but just didn’t have the time to do the blog while travelling. See Tea is for Tarot’s post here: Day 9.

The World

Where does the story begin?
Knight of Pentacles
This is Austin’s card! Will we begin the story in her mind? Could be we start out in her dreaming mind. Might make for a good start!

What place is Austin traveling through?
7 of Cups
A world of choices that looks to be quite an opulent place. Riches abound and there are just so many choices here it is tough to know which way to go. Could indicate a place where there are multiple paying mercenary jobs that are difficult to choose between.

Where does Austin find unforeseen help?
8 of Coins
This card is all about workmanship. This could indicate unexpected help arises in a market or a school of some kind.

Where does the major climax take place?
8 of Wands
Well, well, well. I’m thinking we have some sky action here! We know we meet a bunch of skydiving adrenaline junkies along the way. Does the climax occur in a plane? Or does it occur falling at high speeds from the sky? Oh the suspense is killing me!

Where does the story end?
5 of Cups
A little disheartening on first glance to be truthful. This card is deeply worrying but stepping aside from what the card makes me feel and looking instead at the imagery, I might discern an actual location instead of an emotional ending. The space is dark and dank and appears to have brick walls. Could be a basement, a tunnel, or dungeon.

The Love Story – NaNoWriMo & Tarot

The Love Story – NaNoWriMo and Tarot

The Love Story was a bonus spread that Tea is for Tarot  included on Day 8. (Bear with me as I catch up here! I was travelling over the weekend.) This spread was designed to introduce our heroine, Austin, to her true love!

The Cards

Represents Austin in the relationship.
2 of Cups
Interesting. I believe this represents her feeling comfortable and balanced in the relationship. This card represents mutual interests and friendship. These qualities are excellent factors in a good relationships so this bodes well! Check out the spreads here: Day 8

Austin’s love interest.
3 of Wands
Ooh! Intriguing! Austin’s love interest is confident and patient. He sets plans into motion and waits for things to fall into place! Possibly Austin is one of his plans??

How they will meet.
5 of Wands
Seems like there is to be a battle of wills! How exciting! Will they meet chasing the same thing for different purposes? Will they compete against each other? I’m on the edge of my seat!

Where they will meet.
9 of Coins
This card depicts a luxurious garden so they must be meeting in the courtyard or private garden of an estate. I wonder who’s estate?

What their initial feelings are towards one another.
10 of Wands
Looks like they are in strong competition against each other. Power struggles are ensuing but obviously they have a spark of attraction too.

Outcome for the relationship.
The Chariot
Success is a likely outcome for their relationship if they are both determined to make it work. I see prosperous ventures for them if they work together.

The Love Interest

I wanted to KNOW who the love interest would turn out to be so I drew a card and, what do you know, it was the Knight of Coins which is our heroine, Austin! Could it be that she must learn to love herself before she can love another? I felt this required a second pull and so drew the Page of Cups. Seems he will be complex! When coupled with the 3 of Wands from above, it makes for a dynamic individual. Gentle and kind, but a bit romantic too. Because the Page is blond and blue eyed I assume our heroine’s love interest will be the same. Most likely he is a bit younger than she is as well. Exciting!

The Heart of the Story – NaNoWriMo & Tarot

Today we flesh out what the story is all about. Tea is for Tarot created a 7 card spread aimed at discovering the heart of the story. We build the story up and discover what drives our characters. In doing so, we reveal their motivations. Check out the spread here: Day 6

What Austin is after:
Knight of Coins/4 of Cups
Austin seeks release from boredom even as she seeks a more dependable life.

What secondary goals does your hero have?
King of Swords
This one is obvious! Austin needs to catch the villain! This card represented our villain, Darius” career.

What challenges does Austin face?
10 of Coins
Austin is plagued by insecurity and her loyalties will soon be challenged.

What consequences will your hero face for their actions?
The High Priestess/10 of Cups
Hmmm. Positive consequences: enlightenment and happiness.  Negative consequences: secrets revealed and friends betrayed.

How will your villain try to stop them?
Death/The Tower
Darius plans to destroy her life and shake her faith. Darius wants Austin to feel like her world is crashing down around her.

What is your villain’s motivation?
Knight of Cups
Darius wants to be perceived as prince charming even though he is anything but.

What would/will your villain gain by defeating your hero?
He strengthens his power base. Darius becomes the all powerful god of his world. People follow his every word willingly and faithfully. His power will strengthen his empire.

The Villain

The Villain – NaNoWriMo & Tarot

The villain (or antagonist) in this book will be based off the Queen of Coins. Interesting since our heroine, Austin, is also based on a coins court card. Because this is the villain, I decided to use the reversed aspects of this card. This Queen in reverse is known to be mean, selfish, materialistic, greedy, ruthless, and manipulative. These are excellent villain qualities! While this card generally represents a woman, I feel the villain is a man. The colors are green and gold like the protagonist, but the Queen in this card has wavy auburn hair and green/gray eyes and which I feel is a good description for my villain.

The pros (upright meaning) of the Queen of Coins that I feel fit my villain are: charm, sensuality, resourceful, orderly, and practical.

To see Tea Is For Tarot’s post for this: Day 5

What kind of job, if any, does he have?
King of Swords
Educated, expert, stern, knowledgeable, goal-oriented, strict, cruel, calculating. When I pulled this card, I got the feeling that he dealt in information. Possibly a crime boss who’s currency is information.

Defining Characteristic
The Lovers
Again I feel that the reverse aspects are more applicable here: he’s physically attractive and controlling.

What makes him memorable or forgettable?
The Sun
People fall under his sway because he is charming and attractive. It’s like you have the Sun shining on you when he looks your way. He’s self-assured and wealthy.

What talents does he have?
10 of Wands
Another overlap with our protagonist but expressed differently. His talents are delegation and competition. He’s out to win.

What is his greatest flaw?
Two of Cups
He’s emotionally withdrawn and isn’t able to connect with another person.

What is his greatest strength?
4 of Wands
He’s successful in all of his endeavors and has built himself an empire.

What is his deepest desire?
The World
He wants it all! His hope is that once he rules everything he will feel fulfilled.

What is his deepest fear?
The Devil
One might think this villain IS The Devil! But he’s afraid of being bound up and shackled. He doesn’t want to be attached to anything or anyone tempting as it might seem.

What is his family life like?
His family suffered many hardships but he is the polar opposite of the rest of them. Since he is successful this leads me to believe that is family members are petty thieves. Maybe even addicts.

What is his personal motivation?
9 of Cups
Satisfaction. All he wants in the world is to be satisfied, but he never is.

I assigned the the suits as follows:

Swords – Fierce/Edgy
Wands – Magical
Coins – Earthy
Cups – Intuitive
Major – Unique

I decided I wanted the villain to to have 3 names as well so I pulled 3 cards. I pulled two majors and a cup. After looking up unique and intuitive names I have come up with: Darius Vincent Concord.

The Genre – NaNoWriMo & Tarot

I’m sure you are going, “What the heck is NaNoWriMo?” Well, it’s National Novel Writing Month.  The goal is write 50,000 words of a novel in November. If you have ever even considered writing a novel, this is for you! So how does this relate to Tarot? Well, a fellow Tarot blogger, Tea for Tarot, is putting on a two week challenge leading up to November using Tarot to help us outline our books! I can’t tell you how excited I am for this!

Using Tarot to Write a Novel

This is something that has been in the back of my mind for while now. I’ve put it on the back burner while I work on the Music and Tarot project, but I feel I just have to jump in on this NaNoWriMo & Tarot challenge! Essentially Tarot contains all the building blocks of a good story. The Major Arcana contains the major life events, the Minor Arcana the everyday goings on, and the Court Cards are the people! What a perfect tool for writer’s block, too!

How Does the Challenge Work?

Tea for Tarot will post a daily prompt to follow with your Tarot Cards. Today we chose Genre, Sub-Genre, and Audience. For a special bonus, we used Tarot to choose the Title!

If you are interested in joining the challenge, read Tea for Tarot’s post here: #NaNoWriMoTarot

My Novel

Thanks to Tea For Tarots prompts today, it turns the genre of my book is Mercenary Suspense/Thriller for Women and the title is going to be: The Mountain Rider’s Web. If you want to sign up for NaNoWriMo, visit this page: NaNoWriMo
