One of the best ways to learn something is through making a personal connection to it. Being that Tarot speaks to so many facets of life, lyrics lend themselves well to the cards. Music has power and we make connections to it on a regular basis. In a way, it’s magic because it can transport us back to moment frozen in time as the music and lyrics pluck memories from our minds.

Can’t Buy Me Love – The Beatles

You know, it is sometimes really difficult to choose songs. I mean everyone writes songs that express and explore pain and suffering. Even in my search for songs today, all the songs I came across had to do with being poor. While that may be the reverse aspect, I really wanted to choose a song that reflected the upright meaning of this song. I settled on Can’t Buy Me Love because they talk about buying whatever you want because, really, money doesn’t mean anything. Love is the true wealth. The lyrics of this song speak to that.

Side Note: I really wanted to pick a song from one of the albums in the photo but I’ve already used Pink Floyd’s Money and the other bands don’t really seem to give a fuck about money! LOL.

Eight of Shields – A Music and Tarot Discussion


Sometimes learning to read Tarot is a real struggle! I mean learning 22 major arcana card and 56 minor arcana cards can be daunting! Seriously, learning medical terminology was less work. Generally we learn things better when we can see or make connections. I have had a Tarot deck for 20 years now, and still struggle with some of the cards. As I have collected more decks, I’ve also found that the meanings can be expressed and interpreted in a multitude of ways. So begins my journey.

Music has been a major player in my life. Songs trigger emotions, transport us back to moments in time, and are basically the soundtrack to life! Why not connect each tarot card to a song? A few months ago I began doing just that. These posts have been evolving over time  I hope you will decide to join in on the conversation!

Just a special note: When writing these I consult a number of decks. Some are traditional Rider Waite system and some are not. My first Tarot, Legend The Arthurian Tarot, has Wands-Air and Swords-Fire. Honestly, this has always made more sense to me than the much more common associations of Wands-Fire and Swords-Air. So occasionally these other traits have influenced my choice.

The Eight of Shields is all about working hard and continuous learning. It represents apprenticeship and creative endeavors. To become adept at something, you must invest time and energy.

Eminem sings about the struggle it is to make it in the music business. He knows that you have to work hard for it and chase every opportunity. The lyrics of this song reflect the drive it takes, as well as the sacrifices you make, to succeed in a chosen field.  Begging you to lose yourself in the moment, his words perfectly embody how much one can enjoy their work. He likes rapping, he wants to continue rapping, and he wants to be successful at it. I feel it is a good representation of the Eight of Shields if a little on the stark side. What song would you choose?

She is both the positive and the negative aspects.  I didn’t reflect the negative keywords in the list but this song really catches them in the lyrics. She’s know nurturing (mother), sensual (lover), and bitch (mean). The song expresses how changeable she can be how she has multiple aspects.

This card is generally about a person who embodies the concept of success. He is hard working but supportive, dependable but methodical, and generous but good at making money.

Money – Pink Floyd

The song talks about having a good job and earning a lot of money, but it also touches on the shadow/dark side of money.  Lyrics paint a picture of someone who works hard to get his money but unlike the upright meaning of this card, he isn’t generous. He displays the shadow aspect of greed. Another factor in choosing this song is the cash register sound at the beginning. I brings to mind someone doing a lot business and making a great deal of money.
