Six of Shields – A Music and Tarot Discussion

One of the best ways to learn something is through making a personal connection to it. Being that Tarot speaks to so many facets of life, lyrics lend themselves well to the cards. Music has power and we make connections to it on a regular basis. In a way, it’s magic because it can transport us back to moment frozen in time as the music and lyrics pluck memories from our minds.

Six of Shields is often a welcome card as we are beginning to see the fruits of our labors! At this point, we may be feeling more generous with our time, money, and effort, so we are sharing these things with those who need them. Mutually beneficial action!

Hunger Strike – Temple of The Dog

You might not think this songs suits all the keywords noted here, but I feel it does. Though, possibly in a roundabout way. Hunger Strike is about spreading the wealth because some people have so much and others don’t have what they need.  When Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder sing this powerful anthem, it makes you want to share what you have. To spread your wealth. For once you recognize that you have much, its much easier to share it.

In addition, this song invites you to raise your voice and join the melody. I remember being 22 and working in a shop when one of my co-workers started singing along with Chris and Eddie. Once he started well the rest of us did too. I think that is actually the highlight of working there. We didn’t have much back then, but we sure recognized the need to share.

I don’t mind stealin’ bread from the mouths of decadence
But I can’t feed on the powerless when my cup’s already overfilled, yeah
But it’s on the table, the fire’s cookin’
And they’re farmin’ babies, while the slaves are all workin’
Blood is on the table and the mouths are all chokin’
But I’m goin’ hungry, yeah

6 of Swords – A Music & Tarot Discussion

Sometimes learning to read Tarot is a real struggle! I mean learning 22 major arcana card and 56 minor arcana cards can be daunting! Seriously, learning medical terminology was less work. Generally we learn things better when we can see or make connections. I have had a Tarot deck for 20 years now, and still struggle with some of the cards. As I have collected more decks, I’ve also found that the meanings can be expressed and interpreted in a multitude of ways. So begins my journey.

Music has been a major player in my life. Songs trigger emotions, transport us back to moments in time, and are basically the soundtrack to life! Why not connect each tarot card to a song? A few months ago I began doing just that. These posts have been evolving over time  I hope you will decide to join in on the conversation!

Just a special note: When writing these I consult a number of decks. Some are traditional Rider Waite system and some are not. My first Tarot, Legend The Arthurian Tarot, has Wands-Air and Swords-Fire. Honestly, this has always made more sense to me than the much more common associations of Wands-Fire and Swords-Air. So occasionally these other traits have influenced my choice.

6 of Swords

6 of Swords most commonly represents making a change or embarking on an adventure that clearly has obstacles and challenges. Often it literally means travelling, especially by water. However it can also refer to spiritual travels as well as our final journey.

  • Movement
  • Journey by Water
  • Anticipation
  • Breaking Free of a Rut
  • Easing Restrictions
  • Destination Unknown
  • Hope
  • Travel
  • Hope
  • Steady Progress
  • Improvement
  • Heading for Trouble
  • Wasted Efforts
  • Change in Plans

Come Sail Away – Styx

6 of Swords felt like a fairly easy one to choose this time! As soon as I thought about travel by sea the song just started playing in my head! I especially knew I was on the right track when I noted that the book, Gateway to the Divine Tarot, refers to the River Styx in its description of this card! So the obvious part of why I chose this song is travelling by water and sailing away are a good match up. In addition to this, there is also the lyrics. Essentially they are seeking new adventures. The song notes that there have been good times and bad times. The singer wants to be free. Angels are also mentioned in the song which ties in nicely with journeying to the Otherworlds.

I’m sailing away, set an open course for the virgin sea
Cause I’ve got to be free, free to face the life that’s ahead of me
On board, I’m the captain, so climb aboard
We’ll search for tomorrow on every shore
And I’ll try, oh Lord, I’ll try to carry on
