Six of Shields – A Music and Tarot Discussion

MUSIC AND TAROT BACKGROUND

One of the best ways to learn something is through making a personal connection to it. Being that Tarot speaks to so many facets of life, lyrics lend themselves well to the cards. Music has power and we make connections to it on a regular basis. In a way, it’s magic because it can transport us back to moment frozen in time as the music and lyrics pluck memories from our minds.

SIX OF SHIELDS

Six of Shields is often a welcome card as we are beginning to see the fruits of our labors! At this point, we may be feeling more generous with our time, money, and effort, so we are sharing these things with those who need them. Mutually beneficial action!

KEYWORDS

  • Generosity
  • Kindness
  • Wealth
  • Charity
  • Windfall

MY SONG CHOICE

Hunger Strike – Temple of The Dog

You might not think this songs suits all the keywords noted here, but I feel it does. Though, possibly in a roundabout way. Hunger Strike is about spreading the wealth because some people have so much and others don’t have what they need.  When Chris Cornell and Eddie Vedder sing this powerful anthem, it makes you want to share what you have. To spread your wealth. For once you recognize that you have much, its much easier to share it.

In addition, this song invites you to raise your voice and join the melody. I remember being 22 and working in a shop when one of my co-workers started singing along with Chris and Eddie. Once he started well the rest of us did too. I think that is actually the highlight of working there. We didn’t have much back then, but we sure recognized the need to share.

I don’t mind stealin’ bread from the mouths of decadence
But I can’t feed on the powerless when my cup’s already overfilled, yeah
But it’s on the table, the fire’s cookin’
And they’re farmin’ babies, while the slaves are all workin’
Blood is on the table and the mouths are all chokin’
But I’m goin’ hungry, yeah

KNIGHT OF SWORDS

The Knight of Swords is a man with a mission. He will take up a cause and he will fight for what he believes is right. This man is all about action and getting things done. Highly intelligent but sometimes volatile, he is the most valiant of the Knights of the Tarot.

MY SONG CHOICE

Holding Out For A Hero – Bonnie Tyler

I first heard this song watching the movie Streets of Fire with Diane Lane when I was just a young girl. Man did I love that movie, I think I might have to order it! Anyway, back on topic here. Some people feel that the Knight of Swords is really the Knight in Shining Armour as opposed to the Knight of Cups. Bonnie Tyler is belting out lyrics about finding a hero who is strong, fast, and fresh from a fight. Not to mention the energy of the song pumps you up and has you ready to go. Who’s more ready to go than the Knight of Swords?

I need a hero I’m holding out for a hero ’til the end of the night He’s gotta be strong And he’s gotta be fast And he’s gotta be fresh from the fight I need a hero I’m holding out for a hero ’til the morning light He’s gotta be sure And it’s gotta be soon And he’s gotta be larger than life

6 of Swords – A Music & Tarot Discussion

MUSIC AND TAROT BACKGROUND

Sometimes learning to read Tarot is a real struggle! I mean learning 22 major arcana card and 56 minor arcana cards can be daunting! Seriously, learning medical terminology was less work. Generally we learn things better when we can see or make connections. I have had a Tarot deck for 20 years now, and still struggle with some of the cards. As I have collected more decks, I’ve also found that the meanings can be expressed and interpreted in a multitude of ways. So begins my journey.

Music has been a major player in my life. Songs trigger emotions, transport us back to moments in time, and are basically the soundtrack to life! Why not connect each tarot card to a song? A few months ago I began doing just that. These posts have been evolving over time  I hope you will decide to join in on the conversation!

Just a special note: When writing these I consult a number of decks. Some are traditional Rider Waite system and some are not. My first Tarot, Legend The Arthurian Tarot, has Wands-Air and Swords-Fire. Honestly, this has always made more sense to me than the much more common associations of Wands-Fire and Swords-Air. So occasionally these other traits have influenced my choice.

6 of Swords

6 of Swords most commonly represents making a change or embarking on an adventure that clearly has obstacles and challenges. Often it literally means travelling, especially by water. However it can also refer to spiritual travels as well as our final journey.

KEYWORDS

  • Movement
  • Journey by Water
  • Anticipation
  • Breaking Free of a Rut
  • Easing Restrictions
  • Destination Unknown
  • Hope
  • Travel
  • Hope
  • Steady Progress
  • Improvement
  • Heading for Trouble
  • Wasted Efforts
  • Change in Plans

MY SONG CHOICE

Come Sail Away – Styx

6 of Swords felt like a fairly easy one to choose this time! As soon as I thought about travel by sea the song just started playing in my head! I especially knew I was on the right track when I noted that the book, Gateway to the Divine Tarot, refers to the River Styx in its description of this card! So the obvious part of why I chose this song is travelling by water and sailing away are a good match up. In addition to this, there is also the lyrics. Essentially they are seeking new adventures. The song notes that there have been good times and bad times. The singer wants to be free. Angels are also mentioned in the song which ties in nicely with journeying to the Otherworlds.

I’m sailing away, set an open course for the virgin sea
Cause I’ve got to be free, free to face the life that’s ahead of me
On board, I’m the captain, so climb aboard
We’ll search for tomorrow on every shore
And I’ll try, oh Lord, I’ll try to carry on

FIVE OF SWORDS

An often dreaded card in the Tarot, the Five of Swords typically symbolizes defeat. Most often due to our own actions. This is a card of learning one’s limits and discovering the result of rash behavior. This card demands we examine our motives and accept constructive criticism.

KEYWORDS

  • Self Destruction
  • Defeat
  • Loss
  • Failure
  • Greed
  • Lack of Self-Control
  • Valuable lessons not to be repeated
  • Accepting one’s limitations
  • Opportunism
  • Desire for Power
  • Injured Self-Esteem
  • Regret
  • Pain
  • Discord

MY SONG CHOICE

Sober – Tool

This is a song of deep regret and frustration. Tool’s lyrics portray the self-destruction of one who has made poor choices and feels he sabotages everything he touches. Phrases like “worthless liar” and “imbecile” are aimed at himself and show how little self-self esteem he has. Obviously in pain, he takes every opportunity to get what he wants and then regrets it later. This powerful song is a perfect representation of the Five of Swords energy, in my opinion. Raw anger and frustration permeate every bit of this song as he sings his sorrows and issues a threat.

Trust in me and fall as well.
I will find a center in you.
I will chew it up and leave,
I will work to elevate you
Just enough to bring you down.

Music & Tarot – Ace of Swords

Music speaks to the majority of us. So what better way to learn the Tarot than to connect each card with a specific song? While there are so many to choose from, I have been attempting to do just that!

TODAY’S CARD: ACE OF SWORDS

Typically depicted as a single sword with a crown, this card represents catalyst, forced change. The spark that drives you to action.

KEYWORDS
  • Determination
  • Conquest
  • Action
  • Clarity of thought/mental clarity
  • Great Force
  • Achievement
  • Victory
  • Success
  • Intellect
  • Breakthrough
  • Truth
  • Bravery

MY SONG CHOICE:

Eye of the Tiger – Survivor

Do I even need to explain this one? What better song than the one from the Rocky movies (also, Dean Winchester slays it). The lyrics of this song are all about determination and working hard to win. If that isn’t enough, Sylvester Stalone working his ass off to win should cinch it.

Tell me about your song choice.

It’s the eye of the tiger
It’s the thrill of the fight
Rising up to the challenge of our rival
And the last known survivor
Stalks his prey in the night
And he’s watching us all with the eye of the tiger

Survivor

Music & Tarot – 10 of Swords

Ten of Swords (Athames/Arrows)

This card’s meaning seems to vary a bit more from deck to deck but overall the card represents a loss, regret, ruin, or conflict. Struggling with the decisions we’ve made and the place they have brought us to. Likely our mistakes have cost us something dear to us. We feel like we have no where to go from here.

KEYWORDS

  • Ruin
  • Troubles
  • Failures
  • Rock Bottom
  • Climax
  • Showdown
  • Defeat
  • Loss
  • Melodrama
  • Pain
  • Sadness
  • Betrayal

MY SONG CHOICE:

Fade to Black

The lyrics of this song embody the sense of despair that I think the card also represents. The singer no longer sees the way through and seeing no way out of a situation is much akin to rock bottom.

A little secret about rock bottom: When you hit bottom, the only place to go is up and your future is wide open! Ask yourself where you want to be and start taking steps to get there.

Tell me about your song choice.

SPECIAL NOTE

It just so happens that last night I got to hear this song live and in person!!!! Before you ask, I had picked this song months ago and posted about it on my Facebook and Instgram feeds. It feels a bit magical that this happens to be this week’s song.

Hearing the crowd sing along to this really brought to my attention how much every person has been at that point and had to deal with the Ten of Swords energy. We’ve all been there and if you are dealing with this energy, know you are not alone and you can persevere and come out on the other side. Metallica spoke a lot about being a family last night and there is ALWAYS something that connects us to others even if it doesn’t feel that way. We sometimes have to search for that common ground.

Music & Tarot – 4 of Swords

Four of Swords (Athames/Arrows)

Most commonly depicted as a person in a prone state and obviously still and silent. Sometimes interpreted as a death or a stasis. This card reflects some who come to rest because they are forced to do so. Some who are in quiet contemplation or are quietly focused.

KEYWORDS

  • Stillness
  • Mental power
  • Meditation
  • Focus
  • Rest
  • Relaxation
  • Recuperation
  • Solo time
  • Respite
  • Healing
  • Inactivity
  • Reorienting oneself.

MY SONG CHOICE:

The Sound of Silence – Disturbed Cover of Simon and Garfunkel

The opening lyrics of the song indicate a need for time alone, time in the darkness, to interpret his vision. For me this song really embodies the elements of meditation and mental focus as well as reorienting oneself. The singer knows clarity must come from himself and he wants to share what his intuition/inner voice/inner knowing has revealed to him.

Tell me about your song choice.

Hello darkness my old friend, I’ve come to talk with you again.
