The Magician – A Music and Tarot Discussion

One of the best ways to learn something is through making a personal connection to it. Being that Tarot speaks to so many facets of life, lyrics lend themselves well to the cards. Music has power and we make connections to it on a regular basis. In a way it’s magic because it can transport us back to moment frozen in time as the music and lyrics pluck memories from our minds.

The Magician is considered the wise man of the Tarot. He is perfectly confident in his abilities and is continuously learning. Totally, in harmony with his environment he’s knows exactly what to do and when. People follow him willingly and often go to him for advice.

The Gambler – Kenny Rogers

This song is a classic. Everyone and their dog knows it! Honestly, I wasn’t sure I knew it but I really like the lyrics and went to give it a listen. Sure enough, I KNEW IT.  But really, a mysterious stranger on a train giving you sage advice? Totally a magician thing. The lyrics talk about knowing when to play your cards, when to fold, when to run, and when to walk away. Overall, I think it is a great match for the Magician. He said, “Son, I’ve made a life

Out of readin’ people’s faces
And knowin’ what the cards were
By the way they held their eyes.
So if you don’t mind my sayin’
I can see you’re out of aces
For a taste of your whiskey
I’ll give you some advice.

The Villain – NaNoWriMo & Tarot

The villain (or antagonist) in this book will be based off the Queen of Coins. Interesting since our heroine, Austin, is also based on a coins court card. Because this is the villain, I decided to use the reversed aspects of this card. This Queen in reverse is known to be mean, selfish, materialistic, greedy, ruthless, and manipulative. These are excellent villain qualities! While this card generally represents a woman, I feel the villain is a man. The colors are green and gold like the protagonist, but the Queen in this card has wavy auburn hair and green/gray eyes and which I feel is a good description for my villain.

The pros (upright meaning) of the Queen of Coins that I feel fit my villain are: charm, sensuality, resourceful, orderly, and practical.

To see Tea Is For Tarot’s post for this: Day 5

What kind of job, if any, does he have?
King of Swords
Educated, expert, stern, knowledgeable, goal-oriented, strict, cruel, calculating. When I pulled this card, I got the feeling that he dealt in information. Possibly a crime boss who’s currency is information.

Defining Characteristic
The Lovers
Again I feel that the reverse aspects are more applicable here: he’s physically attractive and controlling.

What makes him memorable or forgettable?
The Sun
People fall under his sway because he is charming and attractive. It’s like you have the Sun shining on you when he looks your way. He’s self-assured and wealthy.

What talents does he have?
10 of Wands
Another overlap with our protagonist but expressed differently. His talents are delegation and competition. He’s out to win.

What is his greatest flaw?
Two of Cups
He’s emotionally withdrawn and isn’t able to connect with another person.

What is his greatest strength?
4 of Wands
He’s successful in all of his endeavors and has built himself an empire.

What is his deepest desire?
The World
He wants it all! His hope is that once he rules everything he will feel fulfilled.

What is his deepest fear?
The Devil
One might think this villain IS The Devil! But he’s afraid of being bound up and shackled. He doesn’t want to be attached to anything or anyone tempting as it might seem.

What is his family life like?
His family suffered many hardships but he is the polar opposite of the rest of them. Since he is successful this leads me to believe that is family members are petty thieves. Maybe even addicts.

What is his personal motivation?
9 of Cups
Satisfaction. All he wants in the world is to be satisfied, but he never is.

I assigned the the suits as follows:

Swords – Fierce/Edgy
Wands – Magical
Coins – Earthy
Cups – Intuitive
Major – Unique

I decided I wanted the villain to to have 3 names as well so I pulled 3 cards. I pulled two majors and a cup. After looking up unique and intuitive names I have come up with: Darius Vincent Concord.

Knight of Cups – A Music and Tarot Discussion

Sometimes learning to read Tarot is a real struggle! I mean learning 22 major arcana card and 56 minor arcana cards can be daunting! Seriously, learning medical terminology was less work. Generally we learn things better when we can see or make connections. I have had a Tarot deck for 20 years now, and still struggle with some of the cards. As I have collected more decks, I’ve also found that the meanings can be expressed and interpreted in a multitude of ways. So begins my journey.

Music has been a major player in my life. Songs trigger emotions, transport us back to moments in time, and are basically the soundtrack to life! Why not connect each tarot card to a song? A few months ago I began doing just that. These posts have been evolving over time  I hope you will decide to join in on the conversation!

Just a special note: When writing these I consult a number of decks. Some are traditional Rider Waite system and some are not. My first Tarot, Legend The Arthurian Tarot, has Wands-Air and Swords-Fire. Honestly, this has always made more sense to me than the much more common associations of Wands-Fire and Swords-Air. So occasionally these other traits have influenced my choice.

The Knight of Cups is often thought of as the Knight in Shining Armor. He is charming and charismatic. Often referred to as being romantic. Women sometimes THRILL at the sight of this card! Having artistic capabilities he can represent artists or musicians. Cups (or Chalices) are the suit of emotions and this card makes a lady’s heart just a pitter patter.

Do I Wanna Know – Arctic Monkeys

First off Alex Turner’s voice is SEXY! Seriously, I am sure this song and his voice have charmed the pants off a few women! The lyrics of this song are an invitation in themselves. Romance is in the air as he sings about wishing “you’d” stay and almost kissing “you.” Seriously! This song is perfect for the Knight of Cups!

So have you got the guts?
Been wondering if your heart’s still open and if so I wanna know what time it shuts
Simmer down and pucker up
I’m sorry to interrupt. It’s just I’m constantly on the cusp of trying to kiss you
I don’t know if you feel the same as I do
But we could be together if you wanted to
